Summary (Main Purpose)
The Applications Engineering Manager is responsible for leading and developing a team of CNC programmers and applications engineers while actively contributing to programming, process optimization, and troubleshooting. This role balances strategic leadership with hands-on technical expertise to drive efficiency, standardization, and continuous improvement in machining operations. By collaborating across engineering, production, and quality teams, the manager ensures seamless project execution, compliance with industry standards, and the successful launch of new products.

Key Applications Engineering Manager Responsibilities
- Provide leadership, direction, and mentorship to CNC programmers and applications engineers, overseeing resource allocation, performance management, goal setting, training, and career development. Support hiring, onboarding, and retention of top engineering talent
- Drive initiatives in machining, automation, and process standardization to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance quality. Lead engineering studies, test cuts, and optimization efforts, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and cost reduction
- Set the standard for CNC programming excellence by developing and validating programs, refining CAM post-processors, and troubleshooting complex machining challenges. Act as an escalation point for critical issues while coaching engineers and machinists on best practices
- Act as the key liaison between engineering, production, quality, and customers, ensuring smooth project execution and compliance with ISO 13485, FDA regulations, and other industry standards. Guide quoting processes by providing high-level manufacturing insights
- Champion Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles in customer discussions, ensuring manufacturability is prioritized from the start. Strategically oversee machining workflows, identify automation opportunities, and lean manufacturing strategies
- Own and refine CNC programming best practices, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and engineering change management. Ensure programming documentation, setup sheets, and work instructions are clear, standardized, and effectively implemented on the shop floor
- Monitor and report key performance indicators related to CNC programming efficiency, scrap reduction, machine utilization, and cost savings initiatives
- Partner with the regulatory team to help create and ultimately enforce program revision integrity using systematic tools and processes
- Partner with Capex team to properly spec equipment for new work, improvement on existing work, or replacement of old machines
- Create standards for engineering process traceability within Lowell’s existing software
- Partner with Operations to create growth plans and projects for direct labor associates looking to advance their careers
Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or manufacturing engineering (or equivalent experience) with 7+ years in CNC programming/process engineering and 3+ years in a leadership role, preferably in medical device manufacturing
- Proficiency in 5-axis milling, multi-axis turning, CAM software (e.g., ESPRIT, GibbsCAM), CAD, GD&T, and machining process optimization
- Proven ability to optimize machining processes, reduce cycle times, implement automation, and drive cost-saving initiatives
- Experience mentoring and managing engineers, allocating resources effectively, and driving high-performance teams
- Ability to work closely with production, quality, and customers to ensure smooth product launches and efficient manufacturing processes
- Familiarity with ISO 13485, FDA regulations, documentation control, and engineering change management in a regulated manufacturing environment
- Strong analytical skills to resolve complex machining and programming challenges while maintaining quality and efficiency
- Ability to balance multiple priorities, manage projects effectively, and utilize ERP/MES systems for job scheduling and machine tracking
- Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing principles and practices
- Knowledge of statistical process control (SPC) and other quality improvement methodologies
