Summary (Main Purpose)

The Applications Engineer is responsible for development and maintenance of all CNC programming-related activities for both production and new process development work. This individual is technology-focused, dealing with product and process development, DFM/DFI, optimization, and resolving complex issues.

Applications Engineer Primary Responsibilities
  • Develop CNC programs for new products throughout the facility, including prototypes, development, and production launches
  • Analyze drawings/specifications & participate in the quoting process
  • Lead DFM discussions with customers during the NPI process
  • Conduct engineering studies, including test cuts, to continuously improve & optimize our machining processes
  • Conduct periodic technology reviews, including spindles, workholding, fluid control, etc.), ensuring Lowell continues to be on the cutting edge of available tools/technology
  • Continually optimize existing posts in CAM software
  • Lead cost-savings initiatives throughout the machining process, including tests cuts, cycle-time reductions, setup standardization/reduction, optimized manning requirements, etc.
  • Create setup/program sheets for operations and maintain/control program-related documentation
  • Troubleshoot machining issues as they arise
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure continued compliance and seamless integration of new processes and technologies
  • Train and mentor junior engineers and machinists on CNC programming and best practices

Applications Engineer Required Skills and Experience
  • Strong hands-on machining background with 5+ years of experience programming CNC machines
  • Proven proficiency of CAD/CAM software, specifically GibbsCAM or Esprit
  • In-depth knowledge of CNC machine operations, tooling, and materials
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience.)
  • Experience with advanced CNC technologies, including multi-axis machining and automation
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing principles and practices
  • Knowledge of statistical process control (SPC) and other quality improvement methodologies

What innovation!!
