Applications Engineer – Swiss CNC

Position Summary (Main Purpose)

The Applications Engineer – Swiss CNC is responsible for the development and maintenance of CNC programming activities, with an emphasis on Swiss-style CNC machining for both production and new process development work. This individual will be technology-driven, supporting product and process development, DFM/DFI, optimization, and resolution of complex machining challenges.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Develop and optimize CNC programs with a strong emphasis on Swiss-style CNC equipment, covering prototypes, new product introduction, and validated production processes.
  • Analyze drawings and specifications, participating in the quoting process for Swiss machining opportunities.
  • Lead DFM/DFI discussions with customers during the NPI process, ensuring manufacturability in Swiss platforms.
  • Conduct engineering studies, including test cuts and validations, to improve process capability and reduce variation.
  • Perform technology reviews related to Swiss machining (tooling, guide bushings, bar feeders, work holding, fluid control, etc.), keeping Lowell at the cutting edge.
  • Optimize CAM posts and streamline programming practices, particularly for Swiss machine platforms.
  • Drive cost-savings initiatives through setup reduction, cycle-time optimization, tool life improvements, and process automation.
  • Create and maintain setup/program sheets, ensuring accurate and controlled program documentation.
  • Troubleshoot Swiss machining issues in real time and provide hands-on support to production.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure regulatory compliance and seamless integration of new processes.
  • Train and mentor engineers and machinists in Swiss machining techniques and best practices.
Required Skills and Experience: 
  • 5+ years of experience programming and operating Swiss CNC machines (Citizen, Star, Tsugami, or equivalent).
  • Proven proficiency with CAD/CAM software, ideally GibbsCAM or Esprit, with strong multi-axis and Swiss-specific programming experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of Swiss machining operations, tooling selection, material behavior, and optimization strategies.
  • Strong background in CNC machining, with additional experience in multi-axis milling/turning a plus.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills across functions.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Experience supporting medical device manufacturing or other regulated industries preferred.
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing principles and SPC methods for process control.
