2. How do they approach quality before production starts?

4. How do they use data to improve decisions?

Manufacturing generates enormous amounts of information. The question isn’t whether a supplier collects data.

It’s whether they know how to use it.

Look for manufacturers that utilize statistical analysis, process capability studies, automated inspection, and process validation to identify issues before they become production problems.

Data should help accelerate decisions, not simply document them.

5. What happens when something changes?

No development project follows the original plan perfectly. Engineering revisions happen. Specifications evolve. Timelines shift. Ask how the manufacturer manages change.

Do they have dedicated project managers? Regular customer updates? Cross-functional reviews between engineering, manufacturing, and quality?

Responsive communication often determines whether a project stays on schedule more than any machine on the production floor.

6. Are they investing in the future, or maintaining the past?

Technology evolves quickly.

The manufacturers that continue investing in advanced machining, automation, metrology, and engineering capabilities are often the ones best positioned to support increasingly complex devices.

Ask about recent investments. Not simply what equipment they purchased, but why they invested and how it benefits customers.

The answer often reveals far more than the equipment list itself.

7. Do they think like a supplier or a partner?

This may be the most important question of all. A supplier fulfills purchase orders. A partner helps solve problems.

They ask questions that others overlook. They challenge assumptions when appropriate. They communicate early. They share recommendations based on experience. They become an extension of your development team instead of simply waiting for the next drawing revision.
