Position Summary (Main Purpose)

The Cost and NPI Engineer will collaborate with Engineering, Quality, and Operations teams to develop accurate cost estimates for our customers. You will oversee the New Product Introduction (NPI) process established by the Manufacturing Engineering team, ensuring projects remain on track and within budget.

Cost Engineer Primary Responsibilities
  • Review and analyze engineering drawings, specifications, and other project documentation to understand project scope and requirements
  • Develop detailed cost estimates, including material, labor, equipment, and overhead costs, using ERP software, historical data and industry benchmarks for accuracy
  • Obtain, evaluate, and integrate supplier and subcontractor quotes to inform cost estimates
  • Identify potential cost and delivery risks and recommend mitigation strategies to ensure reliable estimates
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to gather necessary information and support project execution
  • Prepare and present cost estimates and proposals to internal stakeholders and clients, clearly articulating methodologies, assumptions, and cost drivers
  • Stay informed on industry trends, technologies, and best practices to enhance estimating accuracy
  • Perform other duties as assigned

NPI Leader Primary Responsibilities
  • Manage and coordinate the development and manufacturing transfer of complex components, sub-assemblies, and finished medical devices
  • Develop and manage detailed project plans, task lists, and risk registers to drive execution and ensure alignment with project priorities
  • Coordinate cross-functional team activities to achieve project goals and milestones
  • Act as main point of contact between Lowell and customer to procure all items needed for NPI realization
  • Monitor and report project status, including schedule, budget, and technical risks/issues, providing clear updates and insights to management
  • Proactively identify and mitigate project risks, implementing corrective action when necessary
  • In coordination with the sales team, communicate directly with customers regarding project status, delivery timeline(s), quoting, and costing
  • Ensure post-ship cost analyses are complete and communicated to management; ensure all systems for traceability are adhered to across multiple departments, and facilitate the formal transition from NPI to Production
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Costing and NPI Engineer Preferred Qualifications
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in cost estimating or quoting within the medical device industry, preferably in orthopedic or cardiovascular implants
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field. Years of relevant experience also considered
  • Strong understanding of orthopedic and cardiovascular implant manufacturing processes, materials, and quality standards
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Technical aptitude and the ability to quickly grasp and articulate complex concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Self-motivated and proactive mindset, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously
